Dressed In White

Last year was a tough year for our daughter. In March she started complaining of stomach pains that were so uncomfortable that she missed many of her softball games in the spring. She LOVES softball, and missing a game is something she doesn’t take lightly. By the time we made our trip to British Columbia in May, she was really suffering.

We tried limiting sodas, limiting spicy foods, and limiting acidic foods, but nothing really seemed to help. Her pediatrician tried her on a couple different ulcer meds, but by October, she was in constant pain. We were referred to a specialist at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans, and she went through all sorts of tests and procedures.

After all the tests and hospital visits and phone calls, we learned that everything was normal. At least that’s what the doctor’s nurse said … but he wasn’t living in our home! A friend said the symptoms were very much like her granddaughter’s lactose intolerance symptoms. I called the nurse and asked if that test had been done. It hadn’t been!

I went to the drugstore, bought Lactaid, and started her on it right away. She began to feel some relief immediately, and more and more relief as we learned how much to use and when you use it. Today, she is pain free and enjoying her new sport … Taekwando! I much prefer to see her dressed in her white Taekwando uniform, as opposed to the white robes of the hospital.

Ilove your anti-spam words!! Mine was JOY – I am joyful that the problem was discovered and she is doing so well now! Sometimes Grandmas are the best doctors!

Dont you just love it when the simple wins out! Us Grandma’s can be pretty wise.
I am glad she is much better.
    My word was trust.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your path straight.

@ Julie: You are so right. Jesus IS the one we are thanking!

@ Carrie: Grandma’s are amazing like that!

@ Jill: I am VERY thankful it was something so simple. I would much rather buy the tablets than deal with a scary surgery or something.

    @ Sara: Thanks!

  6. It amazes me the doctor didn’t think of that first! (Just a little frustrating too!) However, I’m soooooo glad McKenzie is better!!!!)

My first thought was IBS. Praising God it’s not that. I am so thankful to whoever came up with lactaid. I use it often, myself. I’m so glad she’s better and enjoying karate. Happy Thankful Thursday!

One thing to check out just in case is something called Celiac Disease. It’s just a gluten intolerance, but it kills the villi in your intestines, which are where the lactose receptors live.

Not trying to freak you out, but it’s a simple blood test to see, and the remedy is just no bread/pasta/anything with gluten in it.

Praise God that she is doing better.

@ Drewe Llyn: The really frustrating thing is that I ASKED for them to check for lactose intolerance at our first appointment with the specialist … grrrr!

@ Laurie Ann: We thought IBS too. In fact the last thing the specialist suggested was that we put her on a mild relaxer to help her tummy not have so many spasms. Thankfully I tried the Lactaid before we filled the prescript for relaxers.

@ M@: Thanks so much for mentioning Celiac Disease. This was one of the very first tests that was done because her symptoms seemed to be so similiar. She tested negative.

@ Denise: Amen! Thank you for praising with me.

  11. I think you should send the bill for all those other tests to the 1st doctor! :-) Cassie had a chest x-ray to check for asthma (doesn’t have it). None of the drs. in the clinic saw anything strange, but the radiologist said she had an enlarged pulminary artery. My dr. said it was nothing to worry about. I’m thinking, “Enlarged pulminary artery is not normal in a 17 year old.” I requested an echocardiogram. It came back perfectly normal. I asked my doctor, “What about the enlarged artery?” He said, “I don’t think she has one.” Well, praise the Lord for that, but that left me with a $750 dollar echo bill I wouldn’t have requested if the radiologist hadn’t said she had an enlarged artery. I asked if I could send the bill to the radiologist. My dr. said he didn’t think so. Oh, well. Perhaps she did have that and God healed it. I’d rather think that than I wasted money. :-) Be blessed!

I had a ton of pain in my lower stomach 2 years ago. It would get to the point where I would get fatigued and dizzy from the pain. I ended up going to urgent care and they said it was probably an ovarian cyst. I was 17 at the time and it freaked me out. I had to go to a ob-gyn but since I had never been before I had to wait 2 months for an appointment. I had to deal with the pain and everything! It was awful!! When I finally had my appointment, the doctor said she thought I might have been lactose intolerant (she knew because she had it), so I gave up all dairy for 2 weeks to test it out, and I had felt better than I had in such a long time! It’s weird how something so simple can cause so much pain, and doctors don’t even think of it. I’m glad you’re daughters okay now. I know the pain and fear that being lactose intolerant caused before I knew I had it.

    God Bless <3
