This is a lovely site that i have just stumbled upon.
However, i do disagree with your view on todays meditation that we do not need to "empty our minds". You also make meditation sound far to simple.
I would urge you to The Joy of Listening to God: by Joyce Huggett. It was through her that i learnt that we need to empty our Mind, or Be Still in order to hear God's voice. That absolute silence is when i truly find complete peace. To shut out the noise and to sit before the Lords feet and quietly wait upon him.Another book which is spot on regarding meditation is Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline.
Mediation is hard. It takes time, persistance, and solitude. No phones, no crying kids. Its the time for you and the Lord to meet and know that He is God.
Yes, focused thinking is a form of meditaion, and i hear that alot, but its not "meditation".

Then, on the worldy note, I had a chronic back problem and developed ME. My Dr told me that i needed to go to Yoga to strengthen my core. I went to a yoga school and learnt what they call meditation. I do not subscribe to their beliefs but it was very interesting to understand what their view is. When they say focus on self, it is not Self as you call it. They are not trying to seek selfishness or greed, but the total opposite.Love, kindness etc.
I do know that its only in Christ that we can be set free, but i just wanted to give my opinion that you should not judge, and this is what we Christians are so good at. Judging others.
Otherwise, well done to a lovely blog site and i look forward to reading more of your posts.
